Diode Research is focused on creating, adapting and scaling interventions using an implementation science framework.

The state of global development allows for an understanding of theoretical interventions, but what needs further work is understanding why the intervention works, how, for whom and in which contexts. Implementation science examines what works, for whom and under what circumstances, and how interventions can be adapted and scaled up in ways that are accessible and equitable.

Interventions that have already been proven to work in certain populations, i.e. have proven efficacy and effectiveness in evaluation studies, are termed evidence-based interventions (EBIs). Diode will employ implementation science methods to study EBIs that are relevant to disempowered communities in need.
A Diode Innovative Tool (DIT) is a new, user-centred, cost-effective approach to achieve improved access to fundamental human rights. Social innovation has been found to be a more collaborative and inclusive way to meet the real needs of people. Diode will use user-centred design and community-based participatory research methods to design DITs that can be tested, improved, and developed into EBIs.

By creating and supporting innovative tools, Diode will create connections and partnerships between government, academic, civil society sectors, and the community to create sustainable and scalable solutions.
The Dharana Project
The Dharana Project is a combined psycho-education and yoga project that aims to improve coping and resilience among at risk adolescents. The project is planned as a pilot project to begin with adolescents in the Somali and Afghan community. If the intervention proves promising, Diode plans to share this information with other groups of adolescents that may need it.

Project ECCO
Project ECCO is a research project that explored ethical challenges faced by vulnerable communities and service providers in Peninsular Malaysia during the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, the qualitative study explored the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic for populations on the move, and the Indigenous populations in Peninsular Malaysia through an ethical lens. The project aims to provide recommendations and educational tools to improve protective policies in future crises.

The CARE Tool
The Chronic and Rehabilitative Illness Empowerment Tool (CARE Tool) is a handheld record for patients to have ownership of their medical information, and in which doctors would update as necessary. The tool would include necessary information for continuity of care and goal setting. We are currently conducting data collection, which should be completed by February 2023.

Covid-19 and Access to Health
The research project aims to identify and understand barriers and opportunities to accessing education and healthcare faced by refugee and asylum-seeking children in Malaysia due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The project also aims to identify and understand how these barriers and opportunities for access have been exacerbated or improved based on age, gender, ethnicity, location, and disability due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This project is commissioned by UNICEF Malaysia and is done in collaboration with IDEAS Malaysia.

Project REFEM
Project REFEM (Research towards the Elimination of Forced and Early Marriage) aims to collect data and create an effective intervention, using user-centred design, against forced and early marriage in affected communities in Malaysia. Project REFEM is a multi-phase project that will last for 3 years.

Birth Registration Project
The research project aims to identify and understand barriers and gaps to accessing birth registration faced by refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant children in Malaysia. This project is commissioned by UNICEF Malaysia and is done in collaboration with Anthrologica UK. Diode has been primarily responsible for the quantitative and qualitative data collection activities. Findings from the research will be used to inform policy changes.
